Hello all and welcome to the latest edition of New Book Wednesday. For those of you who followed me over at The Last Arcade you know NBW as my weekly comic review where I look at one of the many new comics to hit shelves that week. For those of you new readers welcome and enjoy. So let us dive in to this weeks pick Avengers Vs. X-Men #12 the conclusion of Marvel's summer long special event. For a very brief recap: The Phoenix Force, the mighty and often destructive cosmic force, has returned to Earth and split into 5 X-men. Captain America and The Avengers waged battle against The Phoenix Five and their loyal mutant followers even as it seemed The Phoenix Five were making the world a better place. But soon it turned dark and both mutant and Avenger turned their efforts to defeating The Five until only Cyclops/Scott Summers remained. Hellbent on destroying the Earth, Cyclops faces off against the combined forces of The Avengers and The X-men with the fate of all man kind in the balance, and that's where we start with issue #12.
Scott, just having killed Professor Xavier (yes that guy seems to die about every couple of years so don't worry he'll be back I'm sure), has completely lost control of The Phoenix Force and it seems the end of the world is nigh. Tony Stark is struggling to come up with a plan and time is running out. The only people that have been able to hurt The Phoenix have been Hope Summers & The Scarlet Witch, so a plan is hatched (sort of). Needless to say a giant battle ensues and the Earth is saved from annihilation, but for the details on how you'll just have to read for yourself. Now all that aside this book seemed a little anticlimactic to me. I have been reading this mini-series from the beginning along with all the other books that contained AvsX stories so I was pretty well invested. The ramp up to this battle was really interesting but this last book seemed to lack a little something. Not to discourage anybody from reading this story but it might be better to wait for a collection or trade paper back to read all these is one fluid collection. This event had some of the best writers in the industry such as Matt Fraction, Ed Brubaker, & Brian Michael Bendis and the art by Adam Kubert make this series a must have for any serious or casual comic reader. So go ahead and pick this up to round out your collection but if you haven't read it yet just wait for the trades in a couple of months, plus watch out for the new books that are coming out of this series Uncanny Avengers, A+X, & AVX: Consequences and as always Keep On Reading
